What are your needs in birth?

Most people do not take into consideration how different models of care may impact on their perceived needs let alone their physiological needs in birth. Decisions about where to have a baby are often influenced by what friends and family feel safe with before a couple looks into further information about birth. [...]

The great balancing act

I spent all night last night updating the online store and I’m paying for it this morning… sore throat, heavy chesty cough coming on. Ugh! To say that I”m looking forward to a very boring Christmas is a massive understatement. Life has been way too busy of late and I’m feeling the need to have some quiet space. [...]

Testing times: Prenatal tests and diagnoses

During pregnancy, women undergo a number of prenatal screening and diagnostic tests including blood tests, urine tests and ultrasound. These tests are designed to provide information on the condition of the woman and her baby during pregnancy and to determine if the baby may have any major medical conditions.

A very small percentage of mothers have babies that end up being diagnosed with a major medical condition but these days, screening tests are routine for every woman, even if they have no risk factors. [...]

The doula difference

A lot of people ask me what’s the difference between having a doula and a follow through midwife or even sometimes a doula and a midwife. So, I thought I might take the opportunity to clarify the role of a doula to show just how doulas can make a difference in labour and [...]

Does private hospital care mean better care?

How are women supposed to think of birth as normal and achievable if all they hear are horror stories of forceps, vacuum extractors and undignified, unsupported labours with women forced to lie on their backs, legs spread for all the world to see? The beautiful birth I had with my last baby (after two previous caesarean sections—one emergency and one elective) is such a rare experience in the private sector, let alone the public sector. [...]

Sneaky interventions: What every pregnant woman should know

If you see a consultant obstetrician or registrar just prior to or on your due date the chances are you may hear these words: “I’ll just run my finger around the cervix to help get things moving.” Ever wonder what that means? Well, basically, what has become a routine procedure is effectively an intervention that may, as the clinicians say, “get things moving” but it may also cause unwanted side effects that may set off a chain of events you weren’t expecting and it is important to know what this may mean for [...]

Why do women need choices when it comes to giving birth?

What I find is often missing in modern maternity care is the idea of listening to women. In a hospital setting, car providers have pages of lists reminding them of what information they need about a woman to adequately care for her. Missing from this list of reminders, in the majority of cases, is “Have you listened to the woman about her needs and desires?” Why is such an essential element of maternity care so [...]
