If you find, half way through your pregnancy, or even half way through your labor (yes, it can be done!) that your obstetrician is not meeting your needs, you have the power to change the game and discontinue their services, hire someone else or go somewhere [...]

Moving your body in labour is also part of the process of moving into and accepting the labour journey. It’s an amazing transition, that moment where a woman walks up and down stairs in early labour and notices that the activity makes the contractions longer and more intense. She may resist doing this knowing what it brings, but then I gently remind her that the longer the contraction, the more effectively it is working to open her up to give birth to her baby. She has a moment where she realises that she has to move through and into the intensity in order to meet her baby. Avoiding that intensity or distracting oneself from it, can make labour longer and [...]

As someone who suffered from postnatal depression and anxiety following childbirth, I know how important it is to have a support network around you during this [...]

After a full day, I know we all function better if we have some downtime the next day. I wouldn’t expect my children to be the epitome of angelic behaviour in the supermarket the day after being at Southbank for a whole day and wouldn’t expect myself to be the most patient when I’m tired and out of sync with everyone around me. And yet, it feels like others expect that from me, all the [...]
