If you find, half way through your pregnancy, or even half way through your labor (yes, it can be done!) that your obstetrician is not meeting your needs, you have the power to change the game and discontinue their services, hire someone else or go somewhere [...]
Maybe it’s a sign of tough economic times, but I haven’t had the opportunity to do too many Mumma Nurture or Postnatal Meal packages of late (after being run off my feet with them last year). But the other day, I was priviledged to prepare some family meals for a good friend of mine (her sister in law had gifted her a Mumma Nurture package) and I wanted to share what I made because it might inspire you to nurture yourself a bit [...]
I met Akemi only a week before she gave birth but her birth was one of the most transformative births I have attended as a doula. Here’s her story from my perspective as her [...]
Moving your body in labour is also part of the process of moving into and accepting the labour journey. It’s an amazing transition, that moment where a woman walks up and down stairs in early labour and notices that the activity makes the contractions longer and more intense. She may resist doing this knowing what it brings, but then I gently remind her that the longer the contraction, the more effectively it is working to open her up to give birth to her baby. She has a moment where she realises that she has to move through and into the intensity in order to meet her baby. Avoiding that intensity or distracting oneself from it, can make labour longer and [...]
I could call myself a baby planner, I guess, but my vision for Mumatopia is so much bigger than that. I don’t want to just offer a service which is a quick fix to busy mothers, I want to offer a service which makes a difference to their physical and emotional wellbeing in the long-term. As someone who suffered from postnatal depression and anxiety following childbirth, I know how important it is to have a support network around you during this [...]
I’m always a tad nervous calling people out of the blue but it was nice to be the bearer of good news. I was calling a new client to let her know that her work had gifted her a postnatal care package. She looked through the options on the website and decided on 3 visits from me to cook meals and do some light housework and 2 visits from my partner Julie Williams, from Live Organic Health to meet her postnatal therapy needs. Julie and I had only just recently started offering a combined postnatal therapy and support package so we were really excited to have our first client together. [...]
In his book The Scientification of Love, Odent points out that there are many factors in modern maternity care that inhibit the birthing process. Modern hospitals have adapted somewhat but the changes are usually cosmetic: ie. prettier curtains, and calming paint colours on the walls. [...]
Mumatopia is hosting support groups for mums-to-be and new mums at The Ellenborough Room, Precious Packages, 17 Ellenborough Street, Ipswich, starting in February 2010 and operating monthly from February to October 2011. The group meeting will start at [...]
A lot of people ask me what’s the difference between having a doula and a follow through midwife or even sometimes a doula and a midwife. So, I thought I might take the opportunity to clarify the role of a doula to show just how doulas can make a difference in labour and [...]
