How to fire your care provider

If you find, half way through your pregnancy, or even half way through your labor (yes, it can be done!) that your obstetrician is not meeting your needs, you have the power to change the game and discontinue their services, hire someone else or go somewhere [...]

Soul food for Mummas

Maybe it’s a sign of tough economic times, but I haven’t had the opportunity to do too many Mumma Nurture or Postnatal Meal packages of late (after being run off my feet with them last year). But the other day, I was priviledged to prepare some family meals for a good friend of mine (her sister in law had gifted her a Mumma Nurture package) and I wanted to share what I made because it might inspire you to nurture yourself a bit [...]

Why mums need a break and not just a holiday

Our new earlybird rate is now just $300 and includes accommodation, food, craft activities, selfcare workshop, women’s circles, goodie bags, a movie night, yoga, a one hour massage and the support of 4 caring [...]

Keeping focus, even when the crowd goes quiet.

Dan was jogging along about 300 metres behind everyone else. My heart sank! The crowd went really quiet as the round of applause for the winners died down but he never gave [...]

Your pelvis size is not the problem in birth

I met Akemi only a week before she gave birth but her birth was one of the most transformative births I have attended as a doula. Here’s her story from my perspective as her [...]

An open letter to the Australian College of Midwives & the Obstetric Lobby

Women put themselves last in the birthroom. They can be made to feel like they are the poor cousins visiting the luxury mansion of distant relatives. The message is loud and clear: “This is our turf. Don’t even think about running a bath without our say so, but you are more than welcome to partake of our smorgasbord of interventions that may or may not be evidence-based.” Most midwives seem to spend the vast majority of their time doing paperwork and don’t even try to connect with the birthing woman. Some may think this sounds harsh but when you understand what makes it easy for a woman to birth, it seems like nothing short of [...]

Why a gentle birth leads to a healthier, kinder and more sustainable earth

One of the reasons I started Mumatopia as a social enterprise was because I can see the wisdom behind the saying “gentle birth heals mother earth” (coined by humanitarian and midwife Robin Lim from Gentle Birth Bali). My birth experiences and my experience of losing a much wanted baby and nearly losing my life in the process, have taught me how gentle beginnings can nurture a mother’s love for her baby, can create a sense of empathy and patience and a strong sense of [...]

A Personal chef? Now that's Mumatopia!

We are delighted to be partnering with Chef Leith James from Hospitality1 to offer mums home-delivered, nutritious family meals. I am still cooking for clients as part of postnatal and mumma nurture packages. However, an increasing number of clients have been asking for food to be prepared and delivered rather than prepared on-site. [...]

Mumatopia turns one!

Today I am celebrating Mumatopia’s first birthday by offering up a week of pampering and nurturing to a lucky mum via a blog [...]

Birth: Get your wiggle on!

Moving your body in labour is also part of the process of moving into and accepting the labour journey. It’s an amazing transition, that moment where a woman walks up and down stairs in early labour and notices that the activity makes the contractions longer and more intense. She may resist doing this knowing what it brings, but then I gently remind her that the longer the contraction, the more effectively it is working to open her up to give birth to her baby. She has a moment where she realises that she has to move through and into the intensity in order to meet her baby. Avoiding that intensity or distracting oneself from it, can make labour longer and [...]
